In 2016 we were approached by the Canadian government to create content for the relaunch of the long format Census. Production had to be paused for a bit during the elections, but we were eventually able to produce a fun, light-hearted spot reminding us to fill out the all-too-important Census.
Most of the designs and storyboards were done using Photoshop with some of the initial work being done on paper and pencil. We spent some time folding and playing with different papers to figure out how these characters and environments would exist and interact with each other.
After some playing around I created a pre-vis using early geometry and a set of storyboards to lay the groundwork for the spot.
The main and secondary characters were animated by hand using Maya, but the tertiary characters were done through mo-cap. We rented out a mo-cap studio at George Brown and got some friends' kids and some of the producers to record some animation for us.
